PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a waveguide element that can be manufactured easily because of simple structure, that can be miniaturized, and that is suitable for vertical coupling. SOLUTION: The waveguide element is a laminate, having refractive index periodicity in one direction and has: a photonic crystal 2, which is a core having a bottom face vertical to the refractive index periodic direction, an incident slope 2a and an exiting slope 2b both tilted with respect to the bottom face, an incident section 3, and an outgoing section 4. Light is made incident to the bottom face of the photonic crystal 2 by the incident section 3, and the light 5, made incident on the photonic crystal 2, is reflected by the incident slope 2a, producing in the photonic crystal 2 propagation light 8 by a band on the Billouin zone boundary. The propagation light 8 is reflected by the exiting slope 2b, with a light 6 emitted from the bottom face of the photonic crystal 2 and guided to the outgoing section 4. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
