The motor has a phase winding (10) divided into two winding parts (12, 14) and a tap (16) provided between the parts. The tap is connected with a defined potential of a control circuit (18) over a switch (24) in such a manner that the parts are controllably separated from one another. A permanent magnet rotor and a stator are formed with asymmetric poles based on varying pole widths of the adjacent poles, so that the parts generate maximum torque with different rotor positions. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an electronically commutated electric motor.
