A motionless lens system and a method thereof are provided to automatically adjust the focal length by varying a voltage level applied on lens elements. A motionless lens system includes an objective lens(102), a tunable field lens(104), and an imaging lens(106). The objective lens and the imaging lens are made of glass or plastic. The imaging lens is formed as a portion of the tunable field lens, or adjacent to or apart from the tunable field lens. The refractive index of the tunable field lens is changed, when a voltage is applied to the tunable field lens. When the refractive index of the tunable field lens changes, the focal length of the motionless lens system is changed.
