A method and an apparatus for setting an MP3 play position in a mobile terminal are provided to allow a user to variously select MP3 play positions in using an MP3 player and to select a rate equaling to number keys of an overall size of an MP3 file. When music is played in an MP3 play mode, it is checked whether a position select mode is set(201,203,205). When the position select mode is set, a list of music to be played is displayed and desired music is selected(207,209). The entire file of the selected music is read and divided so as to corresponding to number keys by the unit of percentage of the same size(211,213). The selected music is played and a play state is displayed(215,219,221). When a number key for a position selection is inputted while the selected music is played, it goes to play the corresponding position(223,225).
