A method for generating and displaying a text message background image of a mobile terminal is provided to allow a user to express a desired scene with a background image selected by the users or exchange weather information. When a sender inputs a particular character string(S20), a text message processor of a mobile phone of the sender generates a text message corresponding to the input character string(S21). When the sender selects a background image(S22), the text message processor generates a background image index value(S23) and transmits it together with the text message to a mobile terminal of a receiver(S24). When a receiver requests reading or checking of the received text message(S25), a text message processor of the mobile terminal of the receiver refers to the background image(S26) and displays it together with the received text message(S27).
