The method involves transmitting a signal by an input/output module (2), and receiving the signal by another module (2). Another signal, which is in connection with the former signal, is generated and transmitted by the latter module and received by a third module (2). The order, position and/or address of one module are determined by selecting the signals transmitted and/or received by the modules, which are arranged in series. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a device module such as an input/output module for executing a method of addressing, identification and/or position determination of the module in a switchgear; (2) a switch cabinet for integration in a master/slave bus system and comprising a device module; and (3) a bus system e.g. field bus system, comprising a module and/or a switch cabinet.
