PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plastic optical cable which is superior in mechanical characteristics and fire retardancy and doesn't exert an adverse effect upon environments. SOLUTION: A plastic optical cable 11 includes a strand 12, a first coating member 13, a second coating member 18, and tensile strength fibers 17 between the first coating member 13 and the second coating member 18. The second coating member 18 contains 60 to 90 wt% metal hydroxide. An outside diameter L1(mm) of the first coating member 13, an inside diameter L2(mm) and an outside diameter L3(mm) of the second coating 18, and a sum total SA(mm<SP>2</SP>) of respective sectional areas of tensile strength fibers satisfy all of conditions 1.6≤(L3-L2)≤4.0, (L2-L1)/2≤3.0, L3≤5.0, and 0.15πä(L2)<SP>2</SP>-(L1)<SP>2</SP>}/4≤SA≤0.5πä(ωL2)<SP>2</SP>-(L1)<SP>2</SP>}/4. The plastic optical cable 11 shows good properties in repeated bending and a combustion test under severe conditions and is ecological. Furthermore, in the plastic optical cable, a lateral pressure caused by the secondary coating member 18 is not excessively high to maintain the transmission loss of the strand 12.
