PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an overturn prevention device acting so as to avoid the overturn of a passenger when the passenger gets on the escalator. SOLUTION: This overturn prevention device for the escalator comprises a step position measuring device detecting the point of a time when the overall surface of the treads of a step appears forward of a floor plate 22 at the entrance 15 of the escalator and a safety promoting alarm device emitting sound each time the overall surface of the treads appears. Furthermore, the safety promoting alarm device comprises a plurality of fluorescent lines 4 positioned vertical to the advancing direction of the escalator, emitting light each time the overall surface of the treads appears, drawn on the floor plate at the entrance of the escalator at the same widths as the width of the treads in the advancing direction of the escalator, and emitting fluorescent light by a light emitted from the safety promoting alarm device.
