<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To print a printing manuscript by a better image quality in a printer equipped with a plurality of printing units. <P>SOLUTION: Each printing unit is made to print a test chart (S10). The printed results are read (S12). The printing unit suitable for printing of characters and the like, and the printing unit suitable for printing of photographs and the like are judged by analyzing the read results (S14). When printing manuscript data are to be printed, an area of character regions and an area of photograph regions are obtained by analyzing the data.
