The lip seal for moving machine parts, e.g. shafts (3), comprises a flexible sealing lip (7) which has a helical groove (21) running around it. This is filled with a temporary sealing material during testing for leaks which consists of a latex of an oil-soluble polymer. An independent claim is included for a method for testing for leaks using a lip seal as described.
