<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus capable of preventing a user from feeling frustration or restraining its level when a fault occurs in a marking system, for instance, a printer printing system and a diagnostic message is displayed. <P>SOLUTION: Use condition information is logged and tabled when a fault occurs during the operation of the marking system (202), a trend analysis is executed based on the log (204), and a diagnostic message is displayed (206), whereby generated context reflection type fault handling is provided. Thereby, when the frequency of occurrence obtained for every kind of fault does not satisfy a predetermined condition, a first diagnostic message related to the symptom of the fault is displayed; and when it satisfies the predetermined condition, a second diagnostic message different from it, that is, a message related to the root cause of the symptom is displayed instead of it or along with it.
