The invention relates to the use of deuterated N-[2-(5-methoxy-1H-indol-3-yl)ethyl]acetamides or the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof for preventing, treating, or controlling a disorder, disease, or biological function that is related to a relative melatonin deficiency and/or can be treated or influenced by administering melatonin provided that the disease or disorder is not a disorder in the framework of manic depression. The invention further relates to the use of deuterated N-[2-(5-methoxy-1H-indol-3-yl)ethyl]acetamides or the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof for producing a medicament. Also disclosed is a medicament containing deuterated N-[2-(5-methoxy-1H-indol-3-yl)ethyl]acetamides or the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
