PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device capable of continuing to seize a principal subject intended by a photographer on a selective area. SOLUTION: When focus detection result of this time on the selective area is closer than the focus detection result of the last time although a substitute area for the selective area is found out, a transfer to the substitute area is not performed, but focusing of a photographing lens is performed, based on the focus detection result of the selective area. Further, when a substitute area is set and, thereafter, a difference between the focus detection result of the selective area and the focus detection result of the substitute area is within a prescribed range after setting the substitute area, the substitute area is removed and the focusing of the photographing lens is performed based on the focus detection result of the selective area.
