PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an onboard display device capable of performing clear display by obtaining sufficiently high luminance even while the highest luminance (white peak) of a display element considered necessary for the display element by an external environmental state is high. SOLUTION: The onboard display device is equipped with a photodetector 2 which is disposed at a main part of a vehicle and detects the brightness and darkness of external environment, a memory section 3 which stores a prescribed reference level from among a plurality of the reference levels of the brightness, a selection section 4 which selects the prescribed reference level from among a plurality of the reference levels of the brightness, a comparator 5 which compares the level of the brightness and darkness of the external environment detected by the photodetector 2 and the prescribed reference level selected by the selection section 4, a regulator 6 which regulates the level of the brightness and darkness of the external environment to the prescribed reference level as a result of the comparison made in the comparator 5 when the level of the brightness and darkness of the external environment is deviated from the prescribed reference level, and a display element 7 which performs image display at the brightness of the prescribed reference level.
