PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which prevents stains from being made by scattered droplets produced along with suction in a cap. SOLUTION: In a carriage 23, a plate-like shield member 237 is provided on a side wall surface 235 on the side of a head maintaining mechanism 121. The shield member 237 is provided in a position to shield the scattered droplets, which are produced when a recording liquid left in the cap 122a for suction is sucked in, so that the scattered droplets cannot reach a linear encoder scale 128 as a required part. This prevents the position of the carriage 23 and the amount of movement thereof from being inaccurately detected because the linear encoder 128 is stained with the scattered droplets.
