An illumination apparatus and a projection display device using the same are provided to make the shape of a light source similar to that of a receiving member. An illumination system(300) irradiates the light of a light source(310). A projection system(500) modulates the light transmitted from the illumination system according to the gray level of video information and projects the modulated light to a screen. A shape of the light source has a similar shape in comparison with the region of the projection system for receiving the light beam transmitted from the light source. The light beam transmitted from the light source is transmitted at a PBS(Polarization Beam Splitter) surface(510) and modulated at a reflection type micro display panel(520). The modulated light beam is reflected by the PBS surface and transmitted to a projection lens(530) so that the transmitted light beam is enlarged and projected to a screen(700).
