A method and apparatus for constructing an eye diagram. Occurrences of a value in a signal are counted [137, 145, 163] during a time interval and the count is plotted [141, 151, 169] to construct the eye diagram. Occurrences of additional values are counted [137] and selected counts [139] are plotted, or another value is selected [147] as a function of the occurrence count and during a subsequent time interval occurrences of the second value are counted [149] and plotted.
