An apparatus for limiting the drive speed of an engine type forklift truck is provided to limit the drive speed of the forklift truck by preventing an output of an engine from increasing in the case of a travelling mode. An apparatus for limiting the drive speed of an engine type forklift truck includes a hydraulic detection unit(30) and a controller(40). The controller prevents an output value of an engine from increasing to a predetermined value by determining a travelling mode if the pressure of an working oil detected by the hydraulic detection unit is below a predetermined value. If the pressure of the working oil detected by the hydraulic detection unit is above a predetermined value, the controller determines that the mode is a working mode and controls the engine to allow increase of the output of the engine to above a predetermined value.
