In order to locate the position of a microtiter plate 35 that holds a plurality of sample holding containers 33 at predetermined fixed positions on the plate, and more particularly the precise locations of the containers, the holder is illuminated by a light source 43 and a sensor 37 receives an image of the holder and generates image pixel data including the location and intensities of the pixels. The image data is stored into a memory 43 by a processor 39 which also compares the intensities of the pixels with a threshold, determines the holder position on the basis of this comparison, uses a digital match mask that corresponds with the holder to find the best match between the digital match mask and the holder on the holder position, and determines container positions for holding the test samples within the holder position form the best match. |
