There is provided an axial piston device with which a pair of first oil passages and a drain oil passage for allowing at least one of the first oil passages to communicate with an oil sump. The axial piston device includes a rotary valve rotated around its axis so as to take a shutoff position/a communication position at which the drain oil passage is respectively shut off and communicated. The rotary valve includes a main body, a small-diameter portion that is contracted with a step from the main body, a flange portion that is enlarged from the small-diameter portion with a step, and a communication groove formed on the outer peripheral surface of the main body. The communication groove is formed at the position in the circumferential direction so as to be fluidly shutoff with respect to an upstream-side drain oil passage of the drain oil passage when the rotary valve is positioned at the shutoff position, and fluidly connected to the upstream-side drain oil passage when the rotary valve is positioned at the communication position.
