The invention provides apparatus which can be used to define a controlled environment within a housing (4) . The housing is provided in conjunction with air flow generating means to allow an airflow through the controlled environment. Items (30) such as mail sorting apparatus can be positioned and operated in the controlled environment. Access apertures (34, 36) can be provided to allow the controlled entry and/or exit of articles and upon the detection of contamination substances within the controlled environment the same is contained within the housing.
