[Also in Group XL(b)] In a ciphering device comprising a number of relatively movable discs with transverse electrically conducting elements and connections between the elements of the various discs to form conducting channels from the inlets of the first disc to the outlets of the final disc, the number of channels is greater than the number of characters or signs to be ciphered and the inlets of the unoccupied channels of the first disc are connected to the outlets of the unoccupied channels of the final disc through paths external to the paths through the discs. In the arrangements shown for alphabetical ciphering of a message to be sent telegraphically, the inlets A corresponding to letters are connected through elements x of the discs 1, 2, 3, 4 and connections y to outlets B allocated to letters, whilst the unoccupied inlets C which are connected to outlets D by means of elements x through the discs and interconnecting paths y are directly connected by external paths 5, 6. As indicated, the channel from an inlet A to an outlet B may include one or more portions of the paths 5, 6 and, in a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a change-over switch is included in the conducting paths 5, 6 to effect a cross-over of the external connections between the inlets to the disc 1 and the outlets of the disc 4. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the discs 3, 4 have a greater number of transverse elements x than the discs 1, 2 and additional external paths 9, 10 are connected respectively between unused outlets of the disc 4 and between an inlet of the disc 3 and an unused outlet of the disc 4. If the message when ciphered is to be transmitted telegraphically, the signals for line-feed and carriage-return are transmitted in clear. |
