Imaging system using diffuse infrared light

An imaging system illuminates an object such as an area of body tissue with infrared light to enhance visibility of buried structures such as subcutaneous blood vessels. The system includes an infrared light source for generating the infrared light and a structure for diffusing the infrared light. The diffusing structure includes one or more layers of diffusing material for diffusing the light. The system further includes a video imaging device which receives the infrared light reflected from the object, generates a visible light image of the buried structure, and projects it onto the object in the position of the buried structure.
