An apparatus and a method for authenticating a qualifying battery of a mobile terminal are provided to prevent various damages due to malfunction or an overheat of a mobile terminal when a battery not for sale is used by disconnecting a battery power path. When an RF signal is received, an electronic tag(11) converts the received RF signal into a DC voltage and executes an internal operation to transmit a coded product serial number written in an internal memory. A charging power unit(22) charges a certain amount of power, and supplies power required for each element of a terminal that performs a qualifying battery authentication function. A tag reader(23) transmits an RF signal required for operating the electronic tag(11), receives the coded product serial number, decodes it, and transfers the decoded number. A memory unit(24) stores a product serial number of a qualifying battery of a mobile terminal. A terminal controller(25) checks whether a battery to be mounted on the terminal is a qualifying battery, and informs the user accordingly.
