The filter has a water discharge device, and a filter unit that is arranged between an inlet and outlet of a filter housing (10). The water discharge device is disposed over a housing (24) that is disposed over an entrance (33) and an exit (28). A collection area is provided in the filter unit to collect water separated from a fuel. A diaphragm (25) is arranged in the housing (24) and separates the entrance from the exit. The diaphragm is disposed over channel structures (26) that are sealably closed on one side. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating a fuel filter.
