SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR SUPPORTING NON-VOLATILE MEMORY USING ON-THE-FLY ERROR CHECKING AND CORRECTION(ECC) CODEC

A system and a method for supporting a non-volatile memory using an on-the-fly ECC(Error Checking and Correction) codec are provided to reduce unnecessary operation cycles and power consumption by calculating parity and syndrome in an on-the-fly mode, and support the non-volatile memory in an on-the-fly ECC mode. An SRAM(41) temporarily stores I/O(Input/Output) data. A NAND flash memory(44) generates the parity in the on-the-fly mode by receiving the input data from the SRAM, provides an ECC information signal according to a result calculating the syndrome in the on-the-fly mode, and transfers the output data to the SRAM. An ECC part(42) selectively stores again the output data stored in the SRAM by correcting the output data according to the ECC information signal. An MIC(Memory Interface Unit)(43) controls access of the SRAM between the ECC part and the SRAM. The NAND flash memory calculates the syndrome and the parity according to a Reed Solomon algorithm.
