Cells or plants capable of producing polylactate or its copolymers and a method for producing the polylactate or its copolymers by using the same cells or plants are provided to produce polylactate and various polyesters containing hydroxyalkanoate as a monomer from cells or plants. The cells or plants capable of producing polylactate or poly(hydroxyalkanoate-co-lactate) contain both of the gene encoding enzyme capable of converting lactate into lactyl-CoA and PHA(polyhydroxyalkanoates) synthetase gene, wherein the gene encoding enzyme capable of converting lactate into lactyl-CoA is propionyl-CoA transferase gene(pct); the PHA synthetase gene using lactyl-CoA as a substrate is phaC or phaRBC; and the cell is Escherichia coli. The method for producing polylactate or its copolymers comprises the steps of: culturing a cell in medium containing lactate and various hydroxyalkanoate as carbon sources; and collecting polylactate or hydroxyalkanoate-lactate copolymer(poly(hydroxyalkanoate-co-lactate)) from the cultured cell.
