A device and a method for starting a computer system are provided to start a portable PC with only the operation applying light shock instead of the operation for pushing a switch by installing an acceleration sensor to the portable PC. An acceleration detecting unit(260) outputs a level of the detected external shock in a preset type when the computer system is a specific mode. A CPU(240) determines start of the computer system by comparing a value output from the acceleration detecting unit with a preset threshold. The acceleration sensing unit includes the acceleration sensor(210) detecting the external shock and outputting an analog signal according to the level of the detected shock, and an ADC(Analog Digital Converter)(220) converting the analog signal output from the acceleration sensor into a digital value. In case that the value output from the acceleration detecting unit is bigger than the preset threshold, the CPU outputs a signal for starting the computer system.
