PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure a distance between devices with high resolution, based on a propagation time of an impulse radio wave, without being affected by a noise. SOLUTION: This distance measuring instrument includes a pulse transmitter for transmitting an electromagnetic pulse sequence generated in response to a pseudo-random noise (PN) code, and a receiver, and measures the distance between the transmitter and the receiver, or a relative position thereof, based on a propagation time of an electromagnetic wave. The receiver is provided with a pulse detector 1 for detecting a received pulse, a PN code generation part 2 for outputting the noise (PN) code, a reception time measuring part 3 for measuring a reception time in every of the received pulses, a time selection part 4 for selecting the reception time, and a time average-processing part 5 for averaging the selected reception times. The time selection part 4 selects the reception time of the effective pulse from the reception times measured by the reception time measuring part 3, the time average-processing part 5 averages the selected reception times, and the propagation time of the radio wave is found, based on the averaged reception time.
