The braking device comprises two brake shoes (2), which are connected in articulated fashion to pivotally arranged levers (3, 4). The braking device furthermore comprises means (7) which connect the levers to one another and further comprises a mechanism (8) for actuating the levers (3, 4). The levers (3, 4) are connected to one another by means of an articulated two-element device (9) which has a common articulated unit (12). This unit (12) is kinematically connected to the mechanism (8) for actuating the levers (3, 4). The means (7) retain the common articulated unit (12) in its end positions and lock the levers (3, 4) after they have been pivoted. In such a braking device, its brake shoes are fixed in the extreme positions of the latter. It is primarily intended for use in the cement, construction and iron and steel industry for braking mills, conveyors and drilling installations for example. <IMAGE>
