PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize miniaturization of a gear shift mechanism and an engine, particularly miniaturization of dimension in a longitudinal direction in the engine for a vehicle for continuously performing clutch operation and gear shift operation. SOLUTION: A shift input shaft (15) is arranged at one section partitioned by a reference line (M) fastening an axis center (O1) of a crank shaft (9) and an axis center (O2) of a shift output shaft (16), for example, an upper part, and a gear shift drum (20), a gear shift shaft (18), a gear shift arm assembly (3) attached to the gear shift shaft (18) and driving the gear shift drum (20) and a clutch arm (44) attached to the gear shift shaft (18) and performing release operation of the clutch on the shift input shaft (15) are arranged at a lower part. Further, the shift input shaft (15), the gear shift drum (20), the gear shift shaft (18), the gear shift arm assembly (3) and the clutch arm (44) are arranged at a clearance in a longitudinal direction between the axis center (O1) of the crank shaft (9) and the axis center (O2) of the shift output shaft (16).
