PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device and display method which are applied to, for example, a portable mini-disk unit so that its operation can be variously checked by using tools used thus far for the unit of a smaller number of digits. SOLUTION: The digit to be displayed in a display element 27A is changed over in response to the change-over of the input digit in the case of an equipment 39 of the number of the displayable digits smaller than the number of the digits of the data to be subjected to the display by changing over the operation according to the equipment 39 connected to a connector for a remote commander.
