摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector in which light use efficiency is not remarkably deteriorated even when smoothly good moving image display is obtained. SOLUTION: Each small lens 122 of a first lens array 120 makes an illumination light flux an illumination light flux having a cross sectional shape so as to illuminate the whole image formation region in a lateral direction in the image formation region of liquid crystal device and so as to illuminate a part of the image formation region in a vertical direction and has the cross sectional shape compressed in the vertical direction. The projector further comprises a rotary prism 770 for scanning the illumination light flux along a y-axis direction on the image formation region synchronizing to a screen writing frequency of the liquid crystal device between a lighting system and the liquid crystal device. The projector is characterized in that a set of polarizing separation prisms having a polarizing separation face and a reflection face are arranged in four rows and the polarizing separation face in the first and four polarizing separation prisms out of the polarizing separation prisms are constituted to reflect the illumination light flux concerning a second polarizing component in a direction approaching an illumination optical axis 100ax.
