An apparatus and a method for recognizing an image through an input signal in a potable terminal having an image input unit are provided to recognize the image, photographed by the image input unit, through the input signal in the portable terminal, thereby improving the efficiency of the image input unit installed in the portable terminal. In a method for recognizing a photographed image through an input signal in a potable terminal having an image input unit capable of photographing images, the method comprises the following steps of: setting a mode of the portable terminal as an image input mode in order to perform vision processing of the photographed image(210); and controlling operation of the portable terminal by applying signals, generated by the vision processing in the image input mode, to a controller of the portable terminal(230).
