A disc device is smoothly started by initializing the disc device, which employs a slot loading system, just after turning on a power supply. The disc device is provided with a disc inserting slot (11) on a front plane of a chassis housing (23) composed of a base main body (10) and a cover (19) for directly inserting a disc, and a traverse (30) and a printed board (14) on the base main body (10), and holds a spindle motor (31), a pickup (32) and a driving means (33) for moving the pickup (32) by the traverse (30). Whether a disc exists in the disc device is discriminated. When the disc exists, disc spin up process is performed, and when the disc does not exist, disc ejecting operation is performed until a disc ejection status detecting means (45) detects a disc ejection status, and furthermore, a disc loading means (26) or a disc ejecting means (44) is permitted to operate until a disc loading standby status is detected.
