An apparatus and a method for controlling a lamp of a projection TV are provided to remove unnecessary development cost and to facilitate the standardization of products by detecting lamp information according to types of lamps and automatically processing the pre-stored bit sequences through respective lamps. A lamp detector(230) detects information about a corresponding lamp through identification signals according to types of lamps. A stabilizer(220) transmits the detected lamp identification signal of the corresponding lamp. The stabilizer receives a bit sequence outputted from a controller(210) to control the operation state of the lamp. A storage unit(250) stores bit sequences by lamps. The controller(210) determines the type of the corresponding lamp by the detected identification signal transmitted from the stabilizer(220), reads the bit sequence stored in the storage unit, and outputs the read bit sequence to the stabilizer(220).
