An apparatus for controlling a washing machine using a dial switch and a method thereof are provided to reduce the production cost of the washing machine by using one dial switch instead of the plural contact-type button switches. An apparatus for controlling a washing machine using a dial switch(220) is composed of: an outer operation unit; a memory; the dial switch rotatably mounted at the outer operation unit to be switched, setting the various operating modes stored in the memory, and selecting the details of the course; a display unit; and a control unit for selecting a predetermined course by a switching signal applied by rotating the dial switch. The outer operation unit contains a setting and operating button(240). The display unit is installed with first/second/third LED groups(211,212,213).
