ALKALI-FREE GLASS AND METHOD FOR PRODUCTION THEREOF

Provided are an alkali-free glass which is reduced in bubble defects and raw material insoluble defects and thus is suitable for a substrate glass for LCD and the like, and a method for producing an alkali-free glass which can be employed for reducing bubble defects and raw material insoluble defects with ease. An alkali-free glass containing substantially no alkali metal oxide and containing SiO₂, Al₂O₃, B₂O₃, MgO, CaO, SrO and BaO as the base composition thereof, wherein a temperature at which the viscosity thereof reaches 10² dPa·s is 1600°C or lower, and it contains sulfur in an amount of 0.001 to 0.1 % by mass percent in terms of SO₃, relative to 100 % of the total amount of the above base composition; and a method for producing the glass which comprises steps of adding a sulfate to a raw material for glass having the above base composition in such an amount that the resultant composition contains the sulfate in an amount of 0.01 to 5 % in terms of SO₃, and then dissolving the material.
