PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for controlling operation and a method thereof capable of precisely controlling a stroke of a reciprocating compressor regardless of a parameter of an internal motor of the reciprocating compressor and a mechanical error of the reciprocating compressor. SOLUTION: A stroke estimate value is calculated by a stroke computing unit 14 on the basis of a voltage and a current of the motor of the reciprocating compressor 16, a phase difference between the stroke estimate value and the current of the motor is detected by a phase difference detector 19, and an inflection point of the phase difference is detected by an inflection point detector 18. The apparatus for controlling operation of the reciprocating compressor is composed such that, on the assumption that a stroke estimate value corresponding to a point of time when the inflection point occurs is a stroke estimate value corresponding to a point of time when a delivery valve of the reciprocating compressor is opened, the stroke estimate value is determined as a stroke reference value by a stroke reference value compensator 11, and a voltage to be applied to the reciprocating compressor is controlled by a stroke controller 13 on the basis of the determined stroke reference value.
