A mobile communication terminal having a display-type abbreviated function button and a method therefor are provided to have a display-type button, displayed by a registered display image, for executing a corresponding abbreviated function to allow a user to execute a specific function in the mobile communication terminal by using a hot-key. A database(215) stores and manages images for a display-type button(253) and a registered image and function of the display-type button(253). A button function setup unit(230) registers the corresponding function of the display-type button(253) to be performed when the display-type button(253) is switched in the database(215) through a menu for registering the display-type button(253). A display image setup unit(240) registers an image selected among the images for the display-type button(253) as an image for displaying the corresponding display-type button(253) in the database(215) through the menu for registering the display-type button(253). When the registered display-type button(253) is switched, the registered corresponding button function is performed.
