<p>A device for starting an engine has an electric double layer capacitor, a rechargeable battery, a starter motor, and a power storage amount control section. Power to the starter motor is supplied from at least either the electric double layer capacitor or the battery. The power storage amount control section controls the amount of power storage in the electric double layer capacitor when a vehicle is in rest to not less than 24% and not more than 60% of the amount of power storage when the vehicle is in operation.</p>
