Textile fabrics constructed of at least 50 per cent nylon fibrous material are seamed together by coating overlapping edge portions thereof with a solution of chloral hydrate and then heating to effect thermal-chemical union thereof. Heat may be applied by radiation, convection or conduction. The fabrics may be cooled after seaming by directly applying a coolant thereto. The solvent for the chloral hydrate may be water, an alcohol, e.g. methanol or ethanol, or an ether, e.g. dimethyl ether or diethyl ether. Preferably, an aqueous or methanolic solution containing 25-90% chloral hydrate by weight is used. In one embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the longitudinal edges of nylon fabrics are overlapped. Chloral hydrate solution is sprayed, brushed, wicked, padded or otherwise applied to the superimposed edge portions. Heat 4 pressure is then applied, e.g. by a hot flat iron. In a modification, the edges of the fabrics are separately dipped into chloral hydrate solution before overlapping. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, nylon fabrics 10, 11 are overlapped and a nylon thread 12 comprising continuous filaments and carrying chloral hydrate solution is positioned along the area of overlap. Heat and pressure is applied, e.g. by an internally heated roller. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, fabrics 14, 15 are unrolled and fed between rollers 16, 17 so that adjacent edges overlap. Nylon filament yarn 18 from a bobbin 19 is coated with chloral hydrate solution 20 by a wick material 22 extending into the solution. The yarn 18 is fed between the overlapped edges of the fabrics 14, 15, a guide 24 being provided. Rollers 25, 26 provide heat and pressure, the central portions 27 between insulators 28 being heated. Specified types of nylon are nylon-66, nylon- 6, nylon-610, nylon-4, nylon-7, nylon-11 and fibre-forming copolymers thereof. The invention is applicable for closing the toe opening of nylon hose knitted on a conventional circular knitter and seaming tubular nylon lace. |
