A display device is provided to realize a wide driving temperature range, a wide viewing angle characteristic, and a high-speed response characteristic, by forming a liquid crystal layer of a material, of which degree of optical anisotropy varies according to application of electric field. A dielectric material layer(3) is provided between two substrates(1,2). The dielectric material layer is formed of a material, which shows optical isotropy when no electric field is applied and shows optical anisotropy when an electric field is applied. Comb-shaped electrodes(4,5) are disposed to face each other on one of the substrates. Polarizing plates(6,7) are respectively provided on the outer surfaces of the two substrates.
