The method involves determining and maintaining, after a sorting pass where the sorted postal items are stored in containers, in a memory the sequence of a passage of the items in a postal sorting machine for a subsequent sorting pass. The variation of line between a current item (E1) and an immediately following item (E2) is determined, during the subsequent pass, when the item (E1) is passed towards a sorting output container. The variation is compared with a threshold to control the replacement of the sorting output container by an empty container.
