A driving control apparatus and a method for a reciprocating compressor are provided to perform various displacement operations depending on load condition on the basis of a stroke when a discharge valve is opened. A driving control apparatus includes a stroke estimator, a phase difference detection part(100), a phase difference inflection point detection part(200), and a stroke order conversion part(300). The stroke estimator estimates a stroke by using a motor voltage and a motor current. The phase difference detection part detects a phase difference between the stroke estimation value and the current. The phase difference inflection point detection part detects an inflection point of the phase difference. The stroke order conversion part analyzes a phase difference inflection point detection signal to vary a stroke order on the basis of the analyzed result.
