PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To evaluate the structure of oxide nuclear fuel pellets by a method excellently economical, easy to control, and highly repeatable. SOLUTION: This thermal etching method for thermally etching the polished surfaces of oxide nuclear fuel pellets in a furnace with inert atmospheric gas, is characterized by raising the furnace temperature at a rate of 3,000°C/hr or more to a retention temperature or maximum temperature. Any one kind of argon, helium, and nitrogen, or a mixed gas of them, is used as the atmospheric gas. In this evaluation method for oxide nuclear pellets, image processing is performed on oxide nuclear fuel pellets acquired by these methods to evaluate crystal grain size or gas cavity size.
