PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a governor for an elevator which can be miniaturized. SOLUTION: The governor for the elevator comprises a shaft-supported governor pulley 13 with a governor rope 7 moving interlockingly with a car 1 being wrapped therearound, pendulums 18, 18A in which claw parts 46, 46A are moved to the outside diameter side by the centrifugal force following the rotation of the pulley 13, an engagement piece which is turned by the abutting on the moved claw parts 46, 46A to release a switch 22, wedge parts 31, 31A which are turned by the self weight to hold the governor rope 7 between holding pieces 37, 37A facing each other, and a hook which is turned by the abutting on the claw parts 46, 46A further moving to the outside diameter side of the pulley 13 to release the support of the wedge parts 31, 31A.
