The rotary piston pump has a pair of oppositely driven rotary pistons mounted in an oval pump housing (10) rotationally secured on support shafts (11). The support shafts have vanes (12) seated on a metal core and covered with an elastomer material and positioned relative to one another so that they can pick up fluid with solids from an inlet opening (13) and after turning 180 degrees can discharge it through an outlet opening (14). The inlet opening widens out beyond 90 degrees at least in the lower area. The geometry of the housing can be modified on both sides so that the inlet and outlet can be interchanged and the pump can be used irrespective of the rotational direction of the piston.
