A filter arrangement for the cleaning of gas, in which a solid filtering material is penetrated by crude gas from the top downwards, has a purging gas (52) passing through the solid filtering material at an angle from the bottom, and by means of the purging gas an upper compacted layer or crust (50) of the solid filtering material is loosened and is freely carried away over a support edge (22). The compacted layer is loosened by the purging gas from the bottom.
