An ink jet printer having multiple transfixing modes is provided to use one timing mode to transfer an image to a recording medium from a middle transfer drum. A method for increasing the print speed includes the steps of: providing a print head adjacently to a middle transfer drum(16) and forming an ink image on the middle transfer drum; maintaining coating of a release agent on the middle transfer drum; providing a transfixing roll(18) which can be disposed on the transfixing station; moving the transfixing roll on the inner and outer sides of the nip forming position with the middle transfer drum.
